If Zack Snyder were a comic book creator, his books would consist entirely of splash pages. That worked pretty well for 300, which is based on a comic book told almost entirely in splash pages by Frank Miller, who is one of the most talented visual storytelllers of all time. When he’s not working from a story that’s already told well mostly through visuals, Snyder’s work more closely resembles Todd McFarlane or Rob Liefeld--great splash pages, but the stuff in between kind of sucks and doesn’t necessarily make sense. In Watchmen, Snyder did a great job of recreating many of Dave Gibbons’ most iconic panels from the book, but failed story-wise. In Sucker Punch, Snyder didn’t have original stories by either Miller or Alan Moore to tie his cool visuals together, and it shows.
