Just about every social group includes one person who catches hell from the other members. The dupe is the guy who gets ridiculed, the guy who gets forced to do the work nobody else wants to do, and the guy that occasionally gets beaten up or peed on. In some cases, the dupe is so desperate to fit in that he actually convinces himself that his mistreatment is a sign of endearment. He's usually wrong. In a fraternity, the dupe is often a legacy who can't be rejected or a nerd who's only in the frat to keep the GPA up to par.

I said back in January that with the holidays over and done with, I’d get back to writing this column every month. Obviously, that didn’t work out quite like I’d planned. Never fear, though: In order to avoid such broken promises in the future, I will heretofore refrain from suggesting that there is any regular schedule for this column. In What's The Matter With Kansas? Thomas Frank explained how conservatives hoodwink (mostly poor) Americans into voting against their own financial self-interest. In The Wrecking Crew, he goes into detail about what they do once they win the elections. While Frank covers all the expected corruption and incompetence, he frames these issues as being integral components of the conservative ideology rather than simple cases of greed and misguided policy. Frank makes a good case that many of the terrible decisions made by conservative leaders are in fact part of a plan to turn their view of government as a bloated, incompetent, and expensive bureaucracy into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

This poem originally appeared in the March issue of Bazooka Magazine. Since it combines late 18th Century poetry with local politics, I'm guessing it has a target audience of about 4 people.

Schroeder-Khan

By Thomas Pain (with apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

In Paxducah did Schroeder-Khan

A stately quilter tent decree

Where the Ohio River ran

At cost astonishing to man

Paid for by you and me.

Fratboys of the Week: The Outsider PDF Print E-mail

As the old saying goes, "birds of a feather flock together," so it's not surprising that most members of a fraternity usually have very similar demographics. Some fraternities are primarily jocks, some fraternities tend to recruit members of a particular race, and some fraternities are made up entirely of rednecks who apparently missed the "Appomattox Courthouse" day of their Civil War history class. The outsider is the guy who falls firmly outside of the default demographic for his frat. His race, social class, subculture, country of origin, sexual orientation, or some other characteristic makes him stand out from his fraternity brothers, often resulting in him being treated a little differently than more typical frat members. For example, he may be subjected to offensive jokes or assumed to be an expert on all aspects of the thing that makes him different.
