My Blogs

Goat Head Gumbo

My blog of politics, pop culture, and Forteana. Updated whenever I think of something to write and actually get time to write it.

The Game Master's Bookshelf

A gaming blog that I've set up but haven't started posting to just yet, mainly because most of the books I plan to write about are currently boxed up.

My LiveJournal

At this point I mainly just post books I've read and links to other sites where I've written stuff. There's probably some good stuff in the archives (including a bunch of rants about the Lexington, Ky police), if you're willing to dig.

Sites I Built

Hex Games

The official home page of Hex Games. I did the site design and wrote a decent chunk of the content. The masthead and most of the graphic elements and banners were designed by Joshua LH Burnett using artwork from assorted Hex products. The site was built on a Joomla 1.0 code base with a heavily modified template.

The Death Cookie

The Death Cookie is an online 'zine written by Hex Games staffers and fans. In previous incarnations, we've billed it as a magazine of "gaming, fringe, and pop culture" and posted articles about everything from video games to gender issues. The newest version of the site, which launched in August 2009, is more focused on gaming. I'm doing the site design and writing a bunch of articles as well as acting as Managing Editor. The Death Cookie logo was designed by Ray Forsythe. The site was built using a Joomla 1.5 code base.

Bazooka Magazine

Bazooka is Paducah's local underground magazine. I built the website and have written several articles for the print version of the mag. The site is built on a Joomla 1.5 code base.

Paducah Promotions

Paducah Promotions is a local music promoter who organizes lots of great events here in Western Kentucky. The web site is about Paducah's bands and venues, past and present.

ANkST & ANkHS

ANkST & ANkHS was a band that some of the people who would later found Hex Games made up for a mock flyer contest at Dragon*Con one year (we won the contest). When the very first Hex Games web site went up in 1997, QAGS co-creator Leighton Connor and I added a whole ANkST & ANkHS fan page. When the Hex site moved to its own domain name and server space (it had started out on my Mindspring account), the ANkST page went away for a while until I uploaded it somewhere else, adding album covers and the teaserfor the Giant Glowing Jesus concept album. Then I moved and changed ISPs again, which meant the A&A site went down once more. Now it's back because, even after 12 years, I still think it's one of the funniest things L8on and I have ever written. Oh, and in case you're wondering, it's supposed to look like a crappy angelfire site. I'm just sad that somewhere along the line I lost the God-awful "wall of flame" background that used to be on the Gunther page.

Content Sites

I actually get paid for this stuff, and for most of them earnings are based (directly or indirectly) on their popularity. So please feel free to click, rate (honestly), and comment.

Epinions.com

I wrote a bunch of reviews here in 2000, cross-posted a bunch of old Death Cookie reviews here in 2004, and just added a few new ones. I intend to add more reviews here as I see/hear/read things worth reviewing.

Associated Content

A lot of the articles here were originally written for another source (old articles for the Death Cookie, stuff from my blogs, other freelance sites, etc.), but I occasionally take one of the assignments here and write an original article.

Ehow.com

I've posted a few "How To" articles here.

Hub Pages

I'm currently writing a monthly-ish series on role-playing here.

Other Random Stuff

How to Scam Games, Part II

This article was written back in 1998, when we first set up the Hex Web site. It's an overtly blatant attempt to get web traffic, but is still reasonably entertaining.
